About the Project

Ayiti Sitwayen is a research and action project using social media technology and machine learning to strengthen active citizenship in Haiti.

The Problem We Address

Haiti faces a profound civic crisis:

  • 20% voter turnout (one of the world's lowest)
  • 16/100 corruption index (among the world's worst)
  • Widespread political disengagement

Our Solution

We use social media platforms where young Haitians already are (TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) to deliver civic messages that resonate with them.

The 2026 Elections

The first round of presidential and legislative elections is scheduled for August 30, 2026, with a runoff on December 6, 2026. Note: voter registration was postponed in April 2026 and the CEP has not yet set new dates — check cephaiti.ht. These are the first elections since 2016 — a historic moment for civic participation.

Our Research

Research Objectives

This project is important research on how social media technology and machine learning can strengthen citizenship in developing countries.

Our Research Questions:

  1. What types of social media content drive civic engagement among Haitian youth?
  2. Which influencers have the most impact on civic attitudes and behaviors?
  3. How does sentiment toward citizenship topics vary across demographics?
  4. Can machine learning predict which content will generate civic action?

Methodology:

  • Quantitative analysis of social media engagement metrics
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) for sentiment analysis in Haitian Creole
  • Social network analysis to identify influential nodes
  • Machine learning models (Random Forest, LSTM) for performance prediction

Expected Outcomes:

  • Database of 500+ Haitian influencers with engagement metrics
  • ML model predicting civic content performance (80%+ accuracy)
  • Sentiment analysis dashboard for civic topics in Creole
  • Research paper: 'Social Media for Civic Engagement in Fragile States'
  • Public dataset (anonymized) for other researchers

Public Interest

This research serves the public interest by:

  • Strengthening democratic participation in Haiti (SDG 16)
  • Developing replicable methods for civic tech in developing countries
  • Providing data-driven insights for civil society organizations
  • Creating open-source tools for civic engagement research
  • Contributing to academic literature on social media and democracy
